Arise, an anti-slavery organization based in London, is partnering with the International Union of Superiors General and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to sponsor the Sisters Anti-Trafficking Awards.

Selma, Alabama, residents experience high levels of unemployment and poverty, and a Jan. 12  tornado made the situation worse for many. Sisters provide services and support to help them.

"We knew that we could accomplish more if we shared our talent and resources and formed a coalition to multiply efforts to end human trafficking," sisters' statement says.

Benedictine sisters have helped women strengthen their ministries as Protestant clergy through a program called Women Touched by Grace, which holds five weeklong retreats at Benedictine monasteries over two years.

The Catholic Truth & Healing website lists 87 Catholic-run Native boarding schools before 1978 across 22 states. Seventy-three of those schools were run or staffed by Catholic women religious.
