Editor's note: NCR executive editor Heidi Schlumpf has joined "The Francis Effect" for its seventh season as a co-host with Franciscan Fr. Dan Horan and David Dault. The following podcast is a bonus episode recorded soon after the events of Jan. 6.

NCR executive editor Heidi Schlumpf has joined Season 7 of "The Francis Effect" podcast. She joins co-hosts Franciscan Fr. Dan Horan (columnist for NCR's "Faith Seeking Understanding") and David Dault, executive producer and host of "Things Not Seen: Conversations about Culture and Faith."

In this episode, recorded soon after the events of Jan. 6, Dault, Horan and Schlumpf process the attack on the Capitol.

They talk about the aftermath, feeling "shocked but not surprised," and being impressed by some members of Congress but horrified by others. They also speak about the rhetoric that got us to this point, and the complicity of some Catholics, including church leaders.
