This article in the New York Post by Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, who also heads the USCCB's Committee on Migration, should, repeat should, invite some House Republicans to think about immigration a bit differently. +Gomez has also published a short new book on immigration that I will review tomorrow. On Wednesday, the House GOP caucus meets to discuss how to proceed on this issue. I am becoming a bigger and bigger fan of Abp Gomez who reminds us in his talks and in his person that America has never been solely for WASPs, that people who live in places named Los Angeles and Santa Fe should be careful about condemning "newcomers" from Mexico, and most importantly, that our obligations as Christians and as Americans compel us to craft a more humane immigration policy than the one we have now.
