UN grapples with updating definitions of 'migrant' and 'refugee'

World Refugee Day - Who is an official refugee? What makes a migrant? United Nations' definitions govern policy and practice for member countries, and these particular definitions haven't been updated in recent decades. With so many people moved away from their homes — 68.5 million — countries are working on setting up new binding provisions. Negotiation meetings on two new compacts continue next month, with the hope to have them finalized and signed by year's end.

Seeking Refuge: Global Sisters Report begins special series on refugees

Over the next several weeks, GSR will bring a sharper focus to the plight of refugees through a special series, Seeking Refuge, which will follow the journeys refugees make: living in camps, seeking asylum, experiencing resettlement and integration, and those who are deported to a country they may only vaguely remember or that may still be dangerous. Though not every refugee follows this exact pattern, these stages in the journey are emblematic for many — and at every stage, women religious are doing what they can to help.

'Too often we turn away': the faces of the global refugee crisis

Seeking Refuge - GSR is following the journeys refugees make: living in camps, seeking asylum, experiencing resettlement, and facing deportation to a country they may only vaguely remember or that may still be dangerous. Here are some of the faces you will meet in our Seeking Refuge series, tracing the path of refugees around the world.

From Postville to Pentecost

On May 11, 2018, more than 200 people from around the country gathered at St. Bridget for a prayer service and rally. No longer alone, we have learned anew the value of community in fighting the attacks on our immigrant sisters and brothers. However, we admit to still being confused and afraid of what might happen next in this anti-immigrant, anti-refugee, "throw them all out" climate of 2018. Send us your Spirit, O God!
