AFRICA: Salesians obtain translation devices to bridge communication barriers thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions

Tools to enhance the quality and inclusivity of training.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (June 10, 2025) Salesians working in African countries were able buy translation devices thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. Those who will benefit from these devices include Salesians and lay collaborators from all 15 provinces, trainers from 118 Don Bosco technical and vocational training centers, Salesian Formation Center Africa Madagascar, and the Don Bosco Tech Africa network.

Salesian Formation Center Africa Madagascar and the Don Bosco Tech Africa network act as regional service arms of Conference of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Africa and Madagascar, operating within the broader Salesian mission of education with a strong emphasis on supporting marginalized youth and underserved communities across Africa and Madagascar.

Its core mission is to enhance youth employability, promote work opportunities, and improve the livelihoods of people who are poor and vulnerable. The Salesian organizations regularly organize regional training programs, workshops, and capacity-building initiatives tailored to the needs of its member institutions and the communities they serve.

Father Gerald Umoh, project manager, said, “The translation devices are a tremendous gift to the African Region — now extended across two regions — and we are deeply grateful for it. This tool will significantly enhance the quality and inclusivity of our regional trainings and formation programs, spanning key sectors such as formation, communication, youth ministry, youth empowerment, and the safeguarding and protection of young people.”

He added, “By helping us overcome language barriers during continental gatherings, the equipment will allow for deeper participation, stronger collaboration and broader outreach. It enables us to connect with more people. It is not just a piece of technology, it is a bridge — uniting hearts, voices, and missions across languages and borders.”
