In January, more than two dozen staff members from Molloy College, Rockville Centre, NY came to the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville, NY, to learn more about how they are connected to the Dominican Spirit.
Molloy College was founded by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville in 1955.
That day, the staff toured the nooks and crannies of the Motherhouse, listened to speakers and broke into small group discussions.
A member of the Dominican Leadership Council -- S. Diane Morgan, OP -- joked that she would introduce the group to the 800-year-old Order in twenty minutes.
She explained the four pillars of the Dominican Order: community, service, prayer and study.
She also talked about Dominican History. She spoke of St. Dominic who founded the order as well as more "recent" history such as Antonio Montesino who in 1511 denounced the European treatment of the indigenous people in the Dominican Republic. She also mentioned Pierre-Lucien Claverie who advocated for the co-existence between Christians and Muslims in Algeria and was assassinated in 1996.
In light of this shared Dominican history, Current President of Molloy Drew Bogner asked the faculty to reflect, "What Is Mission and What Does it Call Us to Do Now?"
