INDIA: Don Bosco Anbu Illam has new chapels for boys and girls homes thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions

New chapels benefit 110 youth.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (July 8, 2026) Don Bosco Anbu Illam in India had donor funding to renovate the chapels in both the boys and girls homes thanks to Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. These chapels serve as vital centers for the community, hosting regular Mass celebrations and other spiritual activities. They are used by the Salesians, sisters and the children residing at the homes. The direct beneficiaries include 110 youth aged 6-18 who are orphaned, abandoned, abused and neglected.

Recognizing the importance of these spaces in nurturing faith, reflection and a sense of community, the renovation was carefully planned to create welcoming, serene environments. The project focused not only on repairing and strengthening the structures but also on enhancing their interior aesthetics through fresh painting and redesigned interiors. Two sculptures, St. John Bosco and Mother Mary with Infant Jesus, were also added.

A Salesian noted, “The goal was to transform the chapels into spaces that radiate spiritual energy, promote peace and inspire a sense of divinity, making them more inviting for both children and staff.”

One of those who benefited from the new chapels is Janaki, who has been living in the home for five years. She hopes to complete her education and become a veterinary doctor one day.

She said, “Before the renovation, the spaces no longer reflected the peaceful and spiritual environment needed for Mass and other religious activities. The chapel did not provide a peaceful environment for prayer and group activities. It sometimes felt distracting during services because of the atmosphere.”

Janaki added, “When the renovation started, I was excited and believed the chapel would become a better place for everyone. The renovated chapel is clean and welcoming, and we can now gather comfortably for prayers, worship services and special events. The improved environment helps us feel peaceful and focused. We appreciate the donors that made this possible.”
