Sr. Anna Nanjala of the Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union - Kenya was shot dead on March 16, 2003, by gangsters who infiltrated the congregation's convent in Lodwar, a town in northeastern Kenya. The armed men posed as locals who needed help from the sisters. When Nanjala answered the door, the gangsters shot her in the head, killing her on the spot. Five other sisters at the convent escaped unharmed.

Nanjala was buried on March 22, 2003, at her home community of Sirende, Kitale Diocese in Western Kenya.
