Sr. Justicia Nekesa said girls' education is not a priority for most parents, and young brides are weighed down by poverty as they solely depend on their polygamous husbands for support.

Sisters turning 25 acres in Kenya into a model for mixed farming

"We want to inspire small-scale farmers to maximize their farms' potential," Sr. Flora Nyawira of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Good Shepherd said. 

Sr. Lucy Kanjira leads a peer group training on gender-based violence in Meru, Kenya. Kanjira told GSR that they called a meeting for teenage mothers in the area. "To our dismay, 118 teenage mothers turned up in the first meeting. At each subsequent meeting, we welcome over 50 new faces. The most recent meeting last month had 459 teenage mothers." Sisters empower Kenyan teenage mothers, raise awareness on gender-based violence

"When we empower a young mother, she's able to protect herself from abuse, care for her children and hopefully break the cycle of poverty," Sr. Lucy Kanjira said.

Sisters work to build learning environment in drought-afflicted border community

In a small border town between Kenya and Tanzania sits Savelberg Mixed Day and Boarding Primary School, founded in 2012 by the Little Sisters of St. Joseph to provide the community with a learning institution.
