Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Feature Series page
The United Nations calls its 17 Sustainable Development Goals "the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all." With a target of achieving them by 2030, the goals are all interconnected and address the global challenges we face.
Goal 11 is "Sustainable Cities and Communities." As the UN puts it: "There needs to be a future in which cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more."
This series includes stories of sisters on the frontlines of that effort.
Many U.S. Catholic sisters find themselves in outsized homes and estates. Through the Nuns and Nones Land Justice Project, sisters are learning how to create new land legacies that center racial and ecological healing.
More than 1,000 Catholic long-term care facilities in the United States, most of which were founded by sisters or are sponsored ministries, and secular nursing homes alike are working through the difficulties that persist. Residents suffer the consequences.
As executive director of New Mexico Interfaith Power & Light, Franciscan Sr. Joan Brown's work focuses on the need to both end environmental damage and find solutions for sustainable energy and employment.
The future of the Pacific nation of Kiribati is difficult to predict and will require courageous decisions soon: Kiribati will need the assistance of Pacific neighbors. Good Samaritan communities are uniquely placed to accompany their Kiribati families, friends and neighbors into the future.
